A deep hole has been mined out of the rock here, its crumbling walls

still bearing the marks of pick-axe strokes. A ramp leads down to the

bottom of the pit, where great sandstone blocks lay in haphazard

piles, as if left in a hurry. A gaping tunnel gouged into the rock at

the bottom of the pit penetrates deep underground into the mountain,

presumably where the mining continued.
