Searching among the ruined books, you find one partially melted
into the floor. A few pages are legible, and you read the
following:

"...the Great War. Most of the cities were razed to the ground
by Hellfire, their citizens slaughtered or driven into the 
surrounding countryside, forced to live in fearful squalor 
while the armies of the Dark One continued their destruction.
The places the least affected by the War were the isolated 
cities-- Daerlon, Silvermere, Goldhome, and the like, as the
Dark One concentrated his attacks upon the centers of strength
from the outset, and even by the time the dark forces were 
finally repelled, they had not yet reached them. The forests of
the Elves escaped wrath, of course, as their obscuring magics
prevented the enemy from penetrating far into the wood. The
Dwarves had but to shut their impenetrable iron doors and let
the tides of Orcs pound themselves senseless against them. The
Kang simply stayed in their swamps, as any evil force who 
entered had not only to battle the hostile swamp, but the
clever guerilla tactics of the Kang warriors. The other races,
however, suffered greatly, their numbers decimated by the 
ruthless and ceaseless assaults of the dark tide..."
