"I'm sick and tired of being the king's personal jeweler.  This is the third
 time this week he's smashed one of his gilded goblets and demanded I repair
 it, Kale!  And what is with this secret project he has forced me to work on?
 All he tells me is, 'Take these gems, then go to Archmage Kale and he will
 tell exactly how they need to be cut.  They must then be set in a rectangular
 plate of platinum, in this exact configuration.  And no mistakes, or it will
 be your head!'  I had to scribble down his design at the bottom of this cover
 so I wouldn't forget!  At any rate, I couldn't stop to chat, so I left this
 book with your secretary with orders to pass it directly to you.  Please
 return it when you have time, I haven't finished reading it!"

At the bottom of the cover is a crude colour diagram, and some words in a
different hand:

"Diamond, Amethyst, Sapphire, Emerald, Topaz, Onyx, Ruby"
